Lisa’s Manifestation Through Asuna’s Body

5 Centimeters per Second

Lisa’s manifestation through Asuna is the brief, perilous result of Ryuuji Morisaki’s attempt to call his dead beloved back: Lisa takes shape through a rift, Asuna collapses as Vita-aqua pours from her, and the presence eventually vanishes, leaving Asuna’s body behind. The episode makes resurrection tangible, but only by making another person’s body the site of its cost.

The Shape Formed by the Rift

Morisaki makes his wish with all the fervor in his heart, calling for Lisa to return. The Clavis answers with brilliant light, and a rift opens in the air before the god. Red tendrils reach out from it and coil in front of Morisaki; the narrative then slows the apparition’s arrival into stages. At first there is only a vague human figure. Little by little, it takes form, until the shape is identified as Lisa, his dear, beloved.

That gradual formation turns an inward longing into something apparently present before him. The scene does not begin with a fully restored person: it offers a rift, strands of light, and a shape that becomes recognizable by degrees. Morisaki’s question—“Lisa? Is that you…?”—registers both recognition and uncertainty. He tries to touch her, but the passage does not establish that this first appearance is an ordinary, stable return to life. Its precise status remains unsettled even as he recognizes the figure as the person he called for.

Asuna’s Body and the Cost of Presence

The manifestation is inseparable from Asuna’s sudden collapse. An intense light flares from the rift and pierces her; she falls like a marionette whose strings have been cut. Vita-aqua seeps from her body. Shin tries repeatedly to wipe it away, but it continues spilling out until it envelops her completely. The sequence shifts the scene’s focus from Morisaki’s hoped-for reunion to the physical danger unfolding around Asuna.

Shin names the violation in his accusation that Morisaki has called a dead soul into Asuna’s body. He is not responding to an abstract danger: Asuna has collapsed, the Vita-aqua is still escaping her, and his attempts to stop it have failed. He urges her not to surrender her heart and warns that she will not be able to return. The warning places Asuna’s own continued presence at stake alongside Morisaki’s desire to recover Lisa. His call to Asuna is answered when, as Shin cries out her name, she slowly sits up in his arms—but her words indicate that the danger has not simply passed.

Recognition Through Asuna

Asuna wraps her arms around herself and says, “It’s cold…” Then she asks where her “Honey” is. Morisaki gasps Lisa’s name and runs toward her. The change in her words makes the manifestation recognizable not just by the form taking shape, but by the voice and address emerging from Asuna’s body. Morisaki hears Lisa in the person before him, while the scene keeps the bodily distinction visible: the body that has collapsed and now sits in Shin’s arms is Asuna’s.

This recognition is interrupted by another movement in the scene. As Morisaki runs, the eyes of Shakuna Vimana move again, and his head snaps backward. The apparition’s appearance therefore does not settle into a private reunion between Morisaki and Lisa. The surrounding danger remains active, and the moment when Lisa seems closest to him is also a moment of abrupt physical interruption. The passage records no calm conversation or lasting restoration; it gives the reader a name, a familiar form, a few words, and the threat still surrounding them.

The Presence Ends

At the manifestation’s close, Lisa’s last words are “I’m so glad.” She closes her eyes, and in the next moment the Vita-aqua bursts. When it is gone, all that remains is Asuna’s body. The ending separates the brief presence from the person through whom it appeared: Lisa has been recognized and has spoken, but Asuna is the one left behind physically.

Morisaki breaks down and sobs. Behind him, Shakuna Vimana transforms back into a ship, while Shin lets out a long sigh. These reactions frame the end not as a successful restoration, but as the aftermath of a presence that could not endure. The progression from light and forming shape to Asuna’s collapse, Lisa’s words, and the burst of Vita-aqua gives the episode its stark limit: Morisaki receives an encounter with his beloved, yet the scene closes with no Lisa remaining in view and Asuna’s body alone. Resurrection becomes visible for a moment, but its appearance does not erase the boundary between the dead and the living; it exposes the danger of crossing that boundary through another person.
